Meet our Trustees

Keith Bushnell worked in four Managing Director/CEO roles in healthcare services for the 23 years before semi-retirement in 2021, including providing NHS out of hours GP services. He remains a Non Executive Director and Chair of the Audit Committee of a rehabilitation and treatment provider where he was CEO for 12 years, and is also Non Executive Chair of a social care provider for adults with physical and/or learning disabilities.

Keith is also a Fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants and brings a wealth of Board level experience to the Chair of Trustees role including governance, strategy, sales and marketing and finance. He is passionate about improving health outcomes and looks forward to supporting UHB Charity in making a real difference to the Trust and its’ patients.

Raj Nutan brings a strong blend of commercial strategy, healthcare leadership and community insight to the Board. With a career spanning senior roles across the community pharmacy and pharmaceutical wholesale sectors, he has led several programmes focused on improving patient experience, strengthening governance and building effective partnerships.

Raj continues to practise as a community pharmacist, giving him a grounded understanding of the pressures facing frontline services and the needs of local patients and families. 

Raj also has experience serving as a Trustee on other charity boards: Pharmacist Support and the British Society of Pharmacy Sleep Services, where he has contributed to strengthening governance, risk processes, fundraising and organisational resilience. A long‑standing Solihull resident, he is passionate about supporting the wellbeing of NHS staff and enhancing care for communities across Birmingham and Solihull. Raj is committed to helping UHB Charity expand its impact through strong governance, meaningful partnerships and a focus on delivering exceptional support for patients and staff.

Amil Khan is a member of the Public Affairs team at the University of Birmingham which manages the university's political engagement activities and plays a key role in shaping the reputation and profile of the institution with significant stakeholders including at the national, international and regional level.

He also serves as a Trustee of United by 2022, the official legacy charity of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and sits on the Board of the Warwickshire Cricket Foundation.

Previously, Amil spent nearly a decade as a school governor at a special education needs primary school in Birmingham and was Chair of the Board of a Multi Academy Trust.

Fiona Alexander has been the Director of Communications at University Hospitals Birmingham since 2006, following 20 years in the media, latterly as editor of the regional newspaper The Birmingham Post. Her portfolio also includes patient and public involvement, staff and patient experience, complaints, Patient Advice and Liaison Services and interpreting.

Fiona was nominated by UHB to serve as a Trustee of the hospitals’ Charity, as she is passionate about improving the experience of patients, their families and Trust colleagues, understanding the enormous impact the charity has through funding extra services and support, above and beyond those which the NHS is able to provide.

Joanne Eales is a qualified Chartered Accountant specialising in accountancy services to SME businesses. She has served as a parish councillor on Lickey & Blackwell Parish Council and has been Treasurer for the parents’ associations at Bromsgrove Preparatory School and Bromsgrove School.

She was appointed Trustee in August 2019, taking over from Andy Pemberton as Chair of the Performance & Finance Committee when he retired in February 2022.

Stan Baldwin was nominated by UHB Trust, to serve on the Charity Board. He is in his third term as an Elected Governor of the Hospital Trust.

Stan has extensive public sector experience, including nine years as a Non-Executive Director on the Board of the Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Trust. He chaired the Mental Health Trust Finance and Charitable Funds committees. Other posts held have include Principal of Community Education in Birmingham and Chief Executive of Wyre Forest District Council.

Stan has worked as a consultant and inspector with agencies such as the Audit Commission, the Sports Council and the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.

Margaret Garbett started her nursing journey in 1987 when she commenced her nursing training at the Queen Elizabeth School of Nursing in Birmingham, training across many hospitals within the Birmingham area, and qualifying in 1990. Following qualification, Margaret specialised in neuroscience nursing, culminating in her role as Clinical Nurse Specialist for Neurosciences at QEHB.

Margaret has always had a strong ambition to develop nursing leadership and improve patient care and went on to undertake several nursing leadership roles within UHB. As a Matron, Margaret worked initially within the elderly care directorate, where she helped to develop and support the implementation of the Trust’s first Frailty Unit, then moved to multispecialty medicine, before her final Matron role within the Emergency Department. During this time, Margaret was able to work with several other NHS trusts to provide specialist advice and support to help improve patient care and nursing practice.

Margaret then became Associate Director of Nursing within one of the surgical divisions as well as Staff Governor. Following the merger of UHB and HEFT, Margaret was successful in securing the post of Director of Nursing for UHB, bringing together the operational nursing teams across the whole of the Trust. Margaret was then appointed as Chief Nurse in June 2022.
