QE Home Away From Home

Our Home away from Home supports families from across the country who are desperate to be near their loved ones while they are having life-saving treatment at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

We have several homes available within a 5-minute walk of the hospital to offer patients and their families free accommodation and parking to take all those stresses away, allowing them to focus on their treatment and care.

We support a wide variety of patients who need to have their families close by to help in their recovery. From transplant patients, children with cancer and those being treated for a brain tumour.

Keeping families together: Supporting families during recovery

Following an operation, many patients require a stay in the Critical Care Unit at the hospital, followed by an inpatient stay. Whilst recovery times are improving, with some patients able to be discharged within a relatively short time frame, in some cases medical and surgical complications mean that patients need a Critical Care bed for weeks, and in some exceptional cases for months. When this is the case, families must be able to remain nearby to the patient, to offer help and support.

Charlotte Schofield, the hospital Charity’s Head of Fundraising, said:

“Having loved ones close by will be a huge source of comfort for patients receiving care at the QE. A dedicated home away from home will ensure that patients won’t have to worry about their family’s accommodation which, in turn, will help them to concentrate on their medical recovery, whilst families can focus on what matters; being there for their loved one as they undergo life-changing surgery."

“The Charity is responsible for the ongoing running costs of the home, which will include funding everyday home comforts like tea, coffee and biscuits, as well as heating, electricity and overall maintenance of the property.”
