Birmingham Focused TOE: Transoesophageal Echocardiography Course 27-29 April 2026
Overview:
Beginner three-day face-to-face course for the fTOE qualification, endorsed by the Association of Anaesthetists and Intensive Care Society, accredited for Royal College of Anaesthetists 15 CPD points. Aimed at Anaesthetists, Intensivists, Cardiologists and Allied Health Professionals interested in learning basic TOE to diagnose causes of haemodynamic instability in the acute and perioperative setting. Our approach emphasises practical competency development through intensive simulated training, mentored practice by an expert multi-disciplinary faculty, and real-world case applications in a supportive learning environment.
- Day 1 & 2: Beginner simulation course mapped to the AoA/ICS FTOE curriculum
- Day 3: Specialist talks advancing knowledge beyond FTOE
Aim
Competently perform focused transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) in the emergency and perioperative setting to assist with diagnosis and management of the unstable patient, to the standards of the Intensive Care Society / Association of Anaesthetists focused TOE (fTOE) accreditation.
Objectives
- Understand the theory of ultrasound and the system controls of the TOE machine
- Demonstrate the basic perioperative TOE views
- Discriminate between different pathologies causing haemodynamic instability using TOE
- Assess the left ventricle, right ventricle and valves
- Construct a report of TOE findings
- Evaluate the strengths and limitations of TOE in challenging case scenarios
