Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham - Cyberknife

CyberKnife is a £3.5 million state-of-the-art radiotherapy machine which was funded by Queen Elizabeth Hospital Charity for the Cancer Centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

The machine provides a pioneering, non-invasive alternative to open surgery that can treat tumours anywhere in the body. It enables very high doses of radiation to be targeted directly at the tumour with pinpoint accuracy, without damaging the healthy tissue.

Geoff Heyes, Consultant Clinical Scientist told us,

Thanks to gifts in wills, the charity was able to provide a CyberKnife machine in 2013 which was ground breaking for NHS treatment at the time with the only other machine in London. The CyberKnife machine is able to treat small well-defined tumours located in traditionally difficult-to-reach parts of the body which, if damaged, would have devastating effects. If you’re in any doubt about whether leaving a gift in your will can make a difference, I can confirm, they absolutely do.
