Hospital Charities in Birmingham and Solihull are asking for community to support their patients this Ramadan

Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity, and Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull Hospital Charities are asking the local community to get involved this Ramadan.
The charities support patients and their families at the four hospitals, by providing state-of-the-art equipment, funding life-saving research, and wellbeing support that helps thousands of patients every year.
This year the charities have organised an online Virtual Gift Shop where people can give gifts of support to patients, from dates to break fast with and toys for children treated in our hospitals to free accommodation for families who have to travel long distances so they can stay together.
The charities have also organised visits from local school choirs who will come to the hospitals to sing, brightening visitors’ time while waiting to be treated.
Imam Mohammed Asad, Muslin Chaplain at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB), said: “Around two billion Muslims from around the world will start fasting to observe Ramadan and fast during daylight hours. Young children, pregnant women, the old, the sick, and travellers are examples of those who are exempt from fasting.
“By getting involved in Ramadan we acknowledge, appreciate and understand each other much better. With our simple acts of kindness and heartfelt gestures, we can go a long way with staff excelling, patients smiling, communities prospering and the Trust flourishing.”
Charlotte Schofield, Director of Fundraising for UHB Charity, said: “We are delighted to be able to engage with the local community around our hospitals in this way. So much of the support we get is from people living and working close to our hospitals, it’s heartwarming when we can come together like this and work as one.
“Our mission at the charity is to ensure that our patients get the best possible care in their time of need. We must remember that there are also people in Birmingham,Solihull, and the wider community, who need our support to get them through what can be, the worst times of their lives.”
The Charity is hosting its second ever Iftar Dinner this year. The inaugural event in 2025 saw £93,000 pledged to fund Kitten Scanners for the Paediatric Department. This year’s event will be raising money for the Heartlands Hospital Charity’s Cancer Appeal, a £150,000 appeal funding a new Haematology and Oncology Centre at Heartlands Hospital, where cancer patients from across the area will come to receive treatment.
