Kind fundraisers create colourful quilt for Fisher House

In 2013, a group entitled the ‘Malvern Quilters’ held their Biennial Exhibition at Cradley, Worcestershire.

The President at that time, Bronwen Warner, was about to retire from her post, and had set a customary challenge for leaving presidents called the ‘Chairman’s Challenge’.

The challenge was for the members of the group to create a quilt that would be raffled at an exhibition for a charity of the President’s choice. Bronwen had decided to support Fisher House, as she had seen the publicity surrounding it at the time and was moved by the concept of it being a ‘home away from home’ for families travelling from hundreds of miles away to be with their loved ones at the QE.

The quilt raised an incredible £1,500 for Fisher House, and the group was delighted to hear that a room at the house was to be named the ‘Malvern’ room in wake of such a generous donation.

The group of creatives didn’t stop here in their generosity, however. Bronwen was delighted to win a raffle with a prize being a large collection of hand-dyed patchwork fabric, and offered her prize to make a quilt for the newly-quipped Malvern room.

The new president of the group, Yvonne Jenkins, coordinated the creation of the quilt, which was contributed to by members of the group. Yvonne decided to create a ‘Zen Quilt’, a relatively modern type of quilt that is simple and contemporary in order to fit with the modern décor of Fisher House.

Six members of the group volunteered to create the squares for the quilt, with Yvonne compiling them and Bronwen applying the binding.

Yvonne and Bronwen then kindly brought the quilt to Fisher House in January of 2016, in order to place it on the sofa in the Malvern Room.

Sian Averill, Fundraising Officer at QEHB Charity, said: “We are incredibly grateful to the kindness and generosity of the Malvern Quilters. They have given up much of their time to create beautiful quilts for the benefit of those at Fisher House. On behalf of QEHB Charity, I want to thank the Malvern Quilters for their continuing support of Fisher House.”
