Mom set to hike for Special Care Baby Unit at Good Hope

In November 2017, Carla Green’s baby, Harrison, was born prematurely at Good Hope Hospital and quickly started to show signs of being unwell.

Harrison was taken down to the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) where he was tested for diseases and put on anti-biotics to treat an infection. After just over a week, Harrison was better again and was able to go home with his family.

Carla said: “This was such a worrying time as we didn’t know what was wrong with him. After hours of constant care, his infection level came down, and he was on the mend.

“Every single staff member on the unit played a part in Harrison getting better. Not only did they care for Harrison but they also cared for his dad and myself. The nurses went beyond with their care and all of the other unwell babies.”

Carla and her team have set themselves the mammoth challenge of the Longmynd 50 mile hike in October.

They will set off at 1pm on Saturday 6 October and aim to be back within the 24 hour time limit, meaning they will be walking throughout the night and on very little sleep.

Laura Power, Fundraising Manager for Good Hope Hospital Charity, said: "A big thank you to Carla for choosing Newborns in Need to fundraise for, there are so many babies each year that are taken to the Special Care Baby Unit that need our help and this money will go towards ‘added extras’ for the unit. Good luck to Carla and her team on their challenge!”
