Become a pets in hospital volunteer

Research has shown that animals can have a positive impact on improving patient wellbeing by reducing anxiety, enhancing patient interaction and promoting a calm, positive environment for staff and patients.

With your help, the hospital Charity has been able to provide the assessments, training and equipment for the dogs who have been visiting wards and departments at the QE, Heartlands and Solihull Hospital.

We are currently looking to recruit volunteers and their dogs across our hospitals, in particular for Good Hope Hospital. Contact Pets in Hospital to register your interest: petsinhospital@uhb.nhs.uk

"I wanted to give something back."

Our volunteers play a key part in the hospital charity, helping us support patients and staff across our four hospital sites. Joan volunteers at our Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity office and comes in for a few hours every week.

After losing her husband to cancer, Joan wanted to give something back to thank the hospital for the amazing care her husband received when he was going through his treatment. Joan said, "After I retired, I wanted to carry on doing something useful with my time and using my skills.

"Every time I come in, I do something different and I’m always learning new things. I love how varied volunteering for the Charity is – no week is the same. From helping with mailouts or folding t-shirts, to general office admin, I do all sorts. I’ve also helped at events, meeting lots of different people and have made good friends. I love it and always look forward to coming in.

What would you say to anyone thinking about volunteering?

"Go for it, 100%! I didn’t know much about what the Charity did, but I’ve learnt so much about the organisation and the different ways it supports patients and staff – it’s mind-blowing how much the Charity does. You need to be committed to volunteering, but I would say get involved. It’s a great way to keep your mind active and makes you feel like you are making a difference."
