Caring father raises thousands for liver patients
A caring father has raised thousands of pounds for the Liver Foundation at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
Nigel Davis, whose daughter, Amy, underwent a liver transplant at the QE in 2015, bravely took part in QEHB Charity’s skydive to raise money for liver transplant patients at the hospital.
The parachute jump took place at Hinton Airfields in Oxfordshire, on Saturday 4 June, where Nigel raised a fantastic £2,750.
Nigel said: “I decided to skydive to raise money for QEHB Charity, after Amy’s fantastic treatment at the QE.”
Amy, who is 22, developed Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC) which is a genetic autoimmune disease.
Nigel continued: “In 2013, Amy underwent a successful liver transplant at the hospital. Now that she is on the road to recovery, I have decided it’s time to give something back.
“I decided to fundraise for a new machine, called the Normothermic Regional Perfusion machine (NRP) which means more life-saving transplants, like Amy’s, can be carried out.”
The NRP machine works by keeping the liver, pancreas and kidneys perfused with the donors’ own oxygenated blood after circulatory death. This means the organs are healthier and are less likely to be damaged, increasing the number of potential organ donors and improving the likelihood of a successful transplant.
Laura Power, Senior Fundraiser at QEHB Charity, said: “We are delighted to hear that Amy is on the road to recovery, and are extremely grateful to Nigel for choosing to support the Liver Foundation.
“We rely entirely on the generous support of fundraisers like Nigel to be able to purchase this vital piece of equipment, which will allow more transplants to be carried out at the QE.”
