David swaps wheels for feet to raise money

David Harris is fundraising for QEHB Charity this year by taking part in a trio of fundraising activities. The cycling fanatic is getting off his bike this year to climb mountains and raise money in memory of his Mum who passed away in 2016.

David’s mum was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2015 and she had the aggressive tumour removed during that year but sadly passed away the following year.

Talking about his mum’s time at the hospital, David said: “I was able to be with Mum for most of her appointments and to spend time with her before her operation and on the ward after it. She was cared for and supported outstandingly, and that is how she felt, cared for and supported.

“I will always be grateful for the few months of life their extraordinary care and support that she would not have otherwise had.”

For the past ten years David has always set himself new targets to achieve that he knows he needs to train for which have mainly been cycling activities, but this year for his 60th birthday he thought he would take on something a little different.

For his trio of fundraising events, David has already taken on Velo Birmingham & Midlands and completed the 100 mile bike ride, but his two remaining events involve him climbing a few mountains across the world.

Talking about the two remaining challenges, David said: “I am nervous I will admit. The Three Peaks challenge will be a real test of my body in ways that it hasn’t been tested for a while.

“The climb of Mera Peak in Nepal is both exciting and daunting. The greatest challenge is going to be the altitude and although I have been at altitude before this is a whole new ball game!”

David is self-funding all of his challenges so every penny donated goes straight to the hospital charity to help us provide even more added extras for patients, staff and families that go over and above what the NHS can fund.
