Family inspired to raise funds for Cancer Appeal in memory of loving mother
Joanne Fraser, 36, from Solihull, has kindly donated £1,500 in support of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity Cancer Appeal by asking for donations in lieu of flowers at her mother, Marian Fraser’s, funeral.
Joanne and her sisters, Clare, Catherine and Ellie together with their Father, George, made the decision to ask for donations as the QEHB was a charity close to Marian’s heart.
Marian Fraser, a keen fundraiser herself, began raising money for QEHB Charity’s Cancer Appeal when she was diagnosed with bowel cancer five years ago.
Joanne said: “Mum was a generous and humble woman who always had time for others. She became aware of the work the QEHB Charity was doing for the Cancer Appeal when she underwent treatment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and she felt she wanted to give something back to the hospital. Mum began fundraising with cake sales and tea parties and as a keen baker her cakes were a sell out!”
Marian sadly passed away in December 2016, but the family continue to support the Charity in her honour.
“At the funeral we chose to collect donations for the Cancer Appeal in lieu of flowers because that’s what Mum would have wanted.”
Joanne added: “She was so dedicated to the Charity. It was her legacy, continuing to support the Cancer Appeal helps us to feel connected to her. She was an amazing woman and went the extra mile to fundraise for such a worthy cause. We want to recognise what the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham did for Mum. We also want to thank all her friends and family for their generous support.”
Mike Hammond, Chief Executive at QEHB Charity, said: “We are extremely grateful for the funds the Fraser family have raised for the Cancer Appeal. The money will go directly towards funding research and equipment, ‘over and above’ what the NHS can provide.”
