Family raise over £10,000 in support of cancer patients at Heartlands
An inspirational family have raised an incredible £10,800 to support the chemotherapy at home nurses who are based at Heartlands Hospital, inspired by the care that their grandad, John, has received.
The fundraising was led by siblings Mason, Callum, Connie, Millie and Taylor, and their cousin Holly, who all wanted to give something back to Ward 19, the dedicated cancer ward at Heartlands Hospital, to say thank you for the care that their grandad John has received. The fundraising team are pictured above, with John.
Their mum, Gemma, said: “Dad was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in January 2018, and his grandchildren wanted to do something to raise money for the care that he has received since then. They worked tirelessly for eleven weeks, giving up each weekend by bag packing, running raffles, helping out at the school fetes and even putting on a dance show.”
Overall, the children’s incredible fundraising efforts brought in £10,800, which will help Heartlands Hospital Charity to continue funding chemotherapy at home nurses, who go out into the community around the hospital to deliver treatments to patients in their homes.
Gemma said: “The children wanted to do something that would help others that are receiving treatments for cancer, and wanted to help fund the nurses who go in to patients’ homes to give them chemotherapy, helping to make the patients a little more comfortable.
“We would really like to thank everyone who supported this wonderful cause. We want to say a very big thank you to all the staff at Heartlands Hospital for all the care they have given.”
Charlotte Coldrick, Chemotherapy at Home Nurse, said: “Our service allows our patients to stay at home, where they are most comfortable, instead of having to go to the clinic for seven says in a row, they can be at home, eating and sleeping as they normally would.
“This service is only possible thanks to the incredible generosity and hard work of fundraisers such as this amazing group of children. The money they have raised will help us to make life easier for cancer patients across the region.”
