Family say thank you for sarcoma treatment

Johan Jansen Van Vurren was treated for sarcoma at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham in May 2019 and to say thank you for the amazing care that he received, his daughter, Heide Nel, hosted an incredible garden party to raise money for the hospital charity!

Johan spent four weeks at the hospital for sarcoma treatment and surgery on his tumour. Since then, he has been able to go back home and organise a huge garden party with friends and family!

Talking about his care at the hospital, Johan said: “I can’t thank the staff and the hospital enough for my care. The hospital and the NHS is just amazing. Everyone from housekeepers to the doctors, nurses and consultants all looked after me and gave amazing care, and the Relatives Wing was great and so accommodating for my wife, Jean, to stay in.”

Heide and her partner Alex put on an incredible garden party which had lots of different stands for people to buy things and make a donation to QEHB Charity and also RSPCA Northamptonshire.

Thanks to incredibly kind donations from friends, family and local business, Heide and Alex were able to have a raffle, tombola, pottery stand, jams and preserves stand and a craft bar which helped them raise a huge £1,250! The money has been split between the Sarcoma fund at the hospital and the Relatives Wing where Jean stayed during Johan’s treatment.

Ellie Pocock, Fundraising Assistant at QEHB Charity, said: “A huge thank you goes to Heide, Alex, Johan and Jean for raising such an incredible amount of money.

“All of the money raised will be going towards added extras for those treated for Sarcoma at the hospital, and also those who will be staying in the Relative’s Wing.”
