Inspirational primary school teacher raises over £3,000 for QEHB Charity

Primary school teacher Ryan Wayne, 26, was enjoying an evening out with friends in Birmingham City Centre when he was attacked, stabbed twice and left fighting for his life on the pavement.

Thankfully, his friend Brodie was on hand to save his life by tending to his wounds and keeping him awake before the paramedics arrived. Ryan was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham where surgeons battled to save his life.

Ryan spent the next week in a coma, and spent the following months slowly recovering his strength after this horrendous ordeal.

Speaking of the aftermath of the attack, Ryan said: “I was absolutely terrified, I thought I was going to die. I thought ‘this is it’. From the moment the paramedics arrived I don’t remember anything, and I was asleep for a week.”

The attack had a huge impact on Ryan’s family. He said: “The hardest part wasn’t the wounds or the pain. It was seeing my mum, dad and sisters so upset. It was gut-wrenching – but I just felt so amazed that my life had been saved.

“The care I received was absolutely incredible. The main thing is that I’m still here.”

Whilst Ryan was still in hospital, his best friend Craig Butler decided to start a fundraising campaign for the Mobile CT scanner at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

Thanks to the generosity of Ryan’s friends, Craig raised a fantastic £1,162 to help towards the cost of the new Mobile CT Scanner which change the way that patients with brain injuries are scanned at the hospital.

By this time, Ryan had his sights set on his own fundraising and campaigning. Ryan decided to hold a charity walk to raise funds for the hospital that saved his life, as well as knife crime charity Ben Kinsella.

The idea for the Lichfield Walk for Awareness was born, and Ryan decided to walk over eighteen miles from Lichfield City Centre to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, accompanied by friends and family.

The walk raised an incredible £3,461 for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity, and Ryan and his friends and family celebrated with a cheque presentation at the hospital.

Sophie Carroll, Senior Fundraiser at QEHB Charity said: “Huge thanks go to Ryan and his amazing friends and family for this incredible fundraising total. Ryan truly is an inspiration, for overcoming the horrific ordeal that he has been through and raising so much money is amazing.

“The money that they have all raised will help us to provide an even better quality of care for those on Critical Care at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.”
