Jane Brown ‘braved the shave’ in memory of friend Becky Giddins

Becky Giddins was an enthusiastic woman who was a passionate PE teacher a frequent fundraiser for QEHB Charity. In 2007 Becky was diagnosed with skin cancer that by 2012 had unfortunately spread to other areas of the body, including her lymph nodes and her lungs in 2013. Becky sadly passed away in 2016 at the age of just 32.
Her family and friends have since fundraised tirelessly in support of the Charity’s ‘Fighting Skin Cancer’ appeal.
One of Becky’s friends that raised money in memory of her is Jane Brown. Jane first met Becky when her youngest daughter Lois was taught netball by Becky. Jane said: “Whenever I think of Becky I smile. She always had a smile, even when she was really sick. She was loved by so many people”.
It was due to Becky’s passion and enthusiasm that subsequently inspired Jane’s daughter Lois as she got older. Lois went on to captain County under 16's, West Midlands Warriors under 19's & under 21's & play for Bath under 21’s whilst at university. She now plays for Becky's team the Worcester Reds, in Premier League 1.
Over the past few years, Becky’s friends and family have fundraised a substantial amount for QEHB Charity in memory of her, Jane Brown decided to fundraise in a spectacular way. Jane chose to do a sponsored shave to support Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity she said:

“I have always had above average thick hair but never knew what to do with it when it got long, so ended up having it tied in a bun most of the time. I decided that having turned 50 last March it was probably time to have a haircut but rather than 'waste' the hair I would grow it longer than normal and then donate it to charity. I contacted the Little Princess Trust who sent me the information on what to do but then realised that in order to raise the maximum amount of money I should take the drastic step of having my head shaved.”
Jane shaved her head at half time on Sunday 10 February 2019 at the Worcester Reds V Grangetown Netball Club National Premier League match. In total, she raised a spectacular £1,881 for QEHB Charity’s Fighting Skin Cancer Appeal!
Sophie Carroll, Senior Fundraiser for QEHB Charity said: “The Charity thanks Jane for raising so much money to support us in such a spectacular way. Thanks to donations like Jane’s, we are able to provide the hospital with cancer research trial staff that will be able to test newer drugs and research methods. The trials that they are conducting will make a huge difference to patients’ lives, and an increased understanding of skin cancers will help patients not just at QEHB, but far beyond.”
