QEHB Charity golden girl brings home four medals from British Transplant Games

A mother of three who received a liver transplant at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham in June 2015 is celebrating this summer – and not just because it marks more than one year since she received the life-saving transplant.

Sue Bennett, 42, from Stafford, attended the 2016 British Transplant Games in Liverpool and cemented her status as a top transplant athlete, achieving not only two silver medals but also bringing back two gold medals for the Birmingham Transplant Sports Team!

The British Transplant Games takes place at a different UK location every year, with the host city for 2016 being Liverpool. The four-day event saw over 900 athletes, all of whom are either transplant recipients or live donors, take part in 30 sporting events. They ranged in age from three to 89, and every type of transplant was represented.

Sue was joined by her family and proudly sported her QEHB Charity running top as she sprinted to victory, achieving silver in the 50 metre freestyle swim and three kilometre run. Sue said: “I so wanted gold in the 3k but my legs were crumbling underneath me and I just couldn't catch her; I was beaten by three seconds!”

Unperturbed, she stormed to first place in the 1500 metres and relay race, saying: “There was no way I was going to be beaten again!”

As if her athletic achievements weren’t impressive enough, Sue has also been organising a charity ball, raffle and auction to take place at Stafford County Showground on Saturday 24 September. The proceeds will go to QEHB Charity’s Liver Foundation UK.

Cathryn Worth, Senior Fundraiser at QEHB Charity, said: “What an achievement! Sue has done incredibly well at the British Transplant Games and we’re really proud and grateful to have her support.”
