Course outline:

This course offers an exciting opportunity for participants to develop Otology skills through operative simulation training. Using the Voxelman simulator, you will practice temporal bone drilling in a digital/virtual reality environment. During a 3-hour session, participants can learn the relevant anatomy and practise surgical techniques involved in cortical mastoidectomy, mastoid exploration, and canal wall up/down mastoid surgery.

Expected experience:

The Otology Digital Temporal Bone Dissection Course is ideal for those inexperienced with mastoid surgery and temporal bone drilling, but can benefit progression up the mastoid surgery learning curve at any stage of training. We recommend completing a minimum of five to ten digital drilling sessions before progressing to the Otology Dry Bone Temporal Bone Dissection Courses. This sequence allows learners to solidify their knowledge of temporal bone anatomy and refine their drilling skills on a digital model before working with physical, consumable models.

Additionally, attending multiple sessions allows participants to follow the 'COMeT' programme, guiding them through a series of structured temporal bone cases and drilling tasks, with regular assessment and feedback at each stage. The programme is particularly suited to inexperienced or novice drill users, but can benefit trainees of all experience levels by enabling them to refine their mastoid surgery skills, while enhancing their understanding of temporal bone anatomy.

For candidates coming up to their FRCS examinations, this course will provide an excellent, hands-on revision modality of temporal bone anatomy often tested in the Fellowship exams.

The real strength of this course is that it is entirely tailored to each candidates training goals.
