Blue haired fundraiser writes book thanking QEHB
Five years ago Sean McCumisky collapsed at work and was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham where he found out he had a brain tumour. After going through chemotherapy, radiotherapy and brain surgery, Sean has been fundraising for QEHB Charity and has now written a book where he thanks the hospital and staff for taking care of him.
After Sean’s hair grew back after his surgery, he decided to dye his hair electric blue to help raise money for the Charity. In 2016, Sean’s niece dyed his hair for him and he left it blue until it completely grew out on its own!
Sean said: “As my hair had started to grow back, I thought I would sacrifice it temporarily for the hospital’s benefit and I thought my friends would be keen to have a laugh at my expense in order to raise some much deserved additional funding.”
From dying his hair blue, Sean raised a huge £365 which went towards ‘added extras’ for patients, staff and families that go over and above what the NHS can fund.
As well as dying his hair blue, Sean recently published a book which he wrote whilst he was recovering from his brain tumour. The book, called ‘Sport’s Perfect but so’s P.I.’, helped him get through his recovery and in it he thanks the staff at the hospital as without them he wouldn’t have been able to write it.
Talking about his book, Sean said: “After dying my hair blue, I knew that I would continue to do all that I could for QEHB. That’s why following my publication I want to say thank you again because without all of you this would not even been started let along finished.”
Sophie Carroll, Senior Fundraising Officer for Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity, said: “Sean has already raised so much for us when he donated his hair blue, but having inspired him to write a book during his recovery is really special to us. Well done Sean!"
