Brave man takes on mile swim for staff who saved his life

Nic Bentley from Kidderminster was involved in a head on collision in 2013 which left him with serious injuries to his arm, leg, head and brain.

He was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham where the staff made the decision to put him in a medical coma in order to save his life.

He was in a coma for 28 days and during that time was operated on ten times. When he woke up, he received a further eight operations taking his total to 18.

Nic said: “I would like to thank the consultants, surgeons, doctors and nurses who worked together to save my life.”

Nic now has no use of his left hand after the removal of 12 muscles and he also has a titanium top and bottom of his right leg.

After six months of training and physiotherapy, Nic was able to walk again even though the nurses admitted they didn’t think he would ever be able to!

Before the accident, Nic had his own business that he set up when he was 40, but he now plans to train as a personal trainer to help people with disabilities to stay motivated to keep active.

To thank everyone at the QE who helped Nic survive through the accident, he is swimming one mile from Padstow to Rock to raise money for the hospital charity.

Justine Davy, Head of Fundraising, said: “It has been a pleasure to talk to Nic about his swim and his experience in the hospital. The Charity is delighted that Nic has chosen to raise some money for us to fund ‘added extras’ for patients and staff at the hospital.”
