Deborah runs a gruelling marathon in memory of her beloved niece
At just the age of 25, Deborah Ashton’s niece Kirsty Cain passed away in November 2017 after suffering from lifelong heart problems.
Deborah is taking part in the Leicester Marathon in memory of her niece Kirsty and is raising money for the Intensive Care Unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham where she was treated.
From birth, Kirsty had numerous heart problems; as a result, she had many operations and procedures during her short life. At the age of 17, Kirsty had her son Charlie which took a huge toll on her heart during the pregnancy. Kirsty was put on the transplant list for a heart and back in February 2009, she had a transplant that gave her nearly eight more years to spend with her son and family before she passed away.
During Kirsty’s stay in the Intensive Care Unit at QEHB, her family were extremely grateful to the staff for the wonderful care she received. Deborah said: “Kirsty was looked after so well at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham which is why I want to raise money for them to show my support for everything they did”
Kirsty is currently training for the marathon that takes place on 14th October and has so far raised an amazing £145 for QEHB Charity in memory of her niece.
Rachel Learmonth, Senior Fundraiser at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity, said: “A huge thank you goes to Deborah who has already done so well in training for her marathon after previously only doing half marathons! The Charity is so grateful that she is raising money for the Intensive Care Unit”.
