Family fundraise in memory of beloved mum
A family have raised an incredible £2,248 for the Cancer appeal at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham in memory of Jenny Braznell, who passed away in July 2019 having been treated at the hospital for lung cancer.
Jenny’s children, Andrew and Amanda, organised a fundraising event which took place at the end of August and saw family and friends come together in memory of Jenny. The event, which included a cricket match as well as a raffle and an auction, was a huge success.
Andrew said: “We had an incredible response at the event, it coincided with a cider and sausage festival and we had so much support from strangers who wanted to help out with our fundraising. The cricket match was great fun and the raffle and auction were a great success.”
The family are keen West Bromwich Albion supporters, and the auction items included a signed Craig Gardner shirt, which sold for an amazing £350, alongside other football memorabilia.
Amanda said: “We’ve always been into sport as a family, mum really enjoyed watching the Cricket World Cup whilst she was in hospital, so it seemed a fitting tribute to hold a cricket match in her memory.”
Reflecting on the treatment that Jenny received, Andrew said: “Mum was diagnosed in November 2017 and was sadly told that the cancer had spread to both her lungs. Whilst she was receiving her chemotherapy treatment she remained positive throughout and tried to live a normal life as best she could.”
The family decided that they wanted to raise money to support the hospital where Jenny had been treated. Andrew said: “The care that mum received throughout her treatment was incredible. We wanted to do something that would help future patients at this hospital, and to give something back for the treatment mum had.”
Katy de Cothi, Fundraising Assistant at QEHB Charity, said: “Our thanks go to the Braznell family for their incredible fundraising efforts. The money that they have raised will help the Charity to continue to fund state-of-the-art treatments for patients with cancer.
“It is thanks to fundraisers like the Braznell family that the Charity has been able to purchase specialist equipment such as CyberKnife, and fund world leading immunotherapy trials which have the potential to change the way that we treat cancer.”
