Military marathoner goes above and beyond for Fisher House

Avid fundraiser WO2 Nicholas McKenzie has completed the New York City marathon in aid of Fisher House!
As the Logistics Manager for the Royal Centre of Defence Medicine at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, part of Nicholas’ job involves him managing the military welfare drivers that support military patients and their families, and so he has a close relationship with those at Fisher House.
Nicholas said: “I had an amazing time [at the New York City marathon] and finished the run in four hours and 52 minutes which is a personal best. As I was presented with my marathon medal, I gave the young lady a Fisher House coin to say thank you.
“The trip was made more special, as a surprise my wife had invited my sister to be with us in New York and a couple of close friends, so to see them all just before the 26 mile point was fabulous.”
Nicholas has fundraised annually for Fisher House with a team of colleagues by doing the Nijmegen Marches, which is a 100 mile march with their kit over four days in the Netherlands! They will be taking on this challenge again in July 2019.
Along with other fundraising activities, Nicholas has raised a huge £1746.39 this year!

Rachel Learmonth, Senior Fundraiser for Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity, said: “A huge well done to Nicholas for once again completing another fundraising challenge!
“All of the money raised will help towards keeping the house going and making sure that every person who stays there feels at home and has access to the best support they need during such difficult times. Thank you Nicholas for fundraising for Fisher House again.”
