Pro golfer goes for World Record in support of hospital

Professional golf coach Jamie Cundy, who is the Golf Manager at Calderfields Golf Club in Walsall, is aiming to break the World Record for the longest golf lesson in history. Jamie is aiming to smash the record, and will begin teaching at 10am on Saturday 14 September, teaching through the night and wrapping up the extra-long lesson at 11am the following day.

This world-record attempt will be held at Calderfields Golf Club, but for Jamie, the day involves far more than a World Record attempt. Jamie was diagnosed with skin cancer in 2014, and received successful treatment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

The father-of-two underwent two successful operations on his left arm to remove the cancer cells and has since turned his attention to increasing awareness of the disease, and the risks posed to people who work outside.

Jamie has worked with the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity to increase awareness of skin cancer, and is now raising money alongside his World Record attempt, which he hopes will go a long way to helping skin cancer patients at Birmingham’s busiest hospital.

Jamie said: “I’m really looking forward to taking on the World Record golf lesson, it will be a fantastic 25 hours, and we’re aiming to raise lots of money to support skin cancer patients at QEHB. When I was diagnosed with skin cancer I had never heard of another pro getting the disease. There was an attitude amongst us golf pros that ‘I’ll be alright, it’s not like I’m sunbathing’. However, the reality is that for people who work outside, in sport or any other industry, that you’re exposed to the risks of skin cancer.”

QEHB Charity’s Skin Cancer appeal raises money to help patients with skin cancer, and raise awareness of the disease. The Charity supports a variety of research projects that are being undertaken at the hospital, which are helping to increase the understanding of skin cancers, developing new and effective ways to fight the disease.

Rachel Learmonth, Senior Fundraiser at QEHB Charity, said: “Everyone at the Charity wishes Jamie the very best of luck for his World Record attempt. We are all incredibly grateful for the work he has done for the Charity in the past four years, raising awareness of skin cancer and raising money to support skin cancer patients at the hospital. The money he raises will allow QEHB Charity to continue to go ‘over and above’ for skin cancer patients, helping to provide them with world class treatment.”
