Jamie Cundy, who is the Golf Manager at Calderfields Golf Club in Walsall, brought news to us earlier in the year that he was aiming to break the world record for the longest golf lesson in history, and all money raised would go to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity.
The reasoning behind Jamie’s 27-hour golf lesson was that he was diagnosed with skin cancer in 2014 and received successful treatment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, so he wanted to fundraise for the hospital that treated him, and he completed the longest golf lesson in history gaining him a Guiness World Record!
Jamie underwent two successful operations on his left arm which removed the cancer cells and has since been increasing awareness of the disease and the risks posed to people who work outside.
Jamie said: “We’re aiming to raise lots of money to support skin cancer patients at QEHB. When I was diagnosed with skin cancer I had never heard of another pro getting the disease. There was an attitude amongst us golf pros that ‘I’ll be alright, it’s not like I’m sunbathing’. However, the reality is that for people who work outside, in sport or any other industry, that you’re exposed to the risks of skin cancer.”
Talking about the 27 hour golf lesson Jamie held, he said: "It was decided about a year ago to try and break the Guiness World Record, we couldn't get an invigilator so it's like an unofficial world record. We did 27 hours non-stop golf coaching without any breaks at all. It was a bit of a marathon, I managed to get through it and everyone has been really supportive."
QEHB Charity is proud to support a variety of research projects that are being undertaken at the hospital to increase understanding of skin cancers and developing new and effective ways to fight skin cancer.
Rachel Learmonth, Senior Fundraiser for Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity, said: “Everyone at the Charity is so amazed at Jamie’s efforts to complete his 27 hour golf lesson to raise money for the Charity. Jamie has done so much for us over the past four years but this is an incredible achievement! The money he has raised will help QEHB Charity to continue to go ‘over and above’ for skin cancer patients, helping to provide them with world class treatment. Well done to Jamie for braving through the longest golf lesson ever and raising so much money for the Charity already.”
Jamie has already raised a huge £1018 which will help us go over and above with the treatment the hospital gives to patients with skin cancer. You can still donate to Jamie’s JustGiving page by clicking the link here.
