Pub team go the distance to raise money for young people with cancer

A brilliant team of staff and regulars from popular pub The Plough Harborne are putting on their trainers and taking part in the first Birmingham International Marathon and the Simplyhealth Great Birmingham Run.

The team go by the name of Scrambled Legs, and are made up of forty staff and customers at The Plough Harborne who all share a passion for running. The team are all raising money to support the Young Persons Unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham which treats teenagers and young adults with cancer.

Many of the team are seasoned runners, pub owner Adam Johnson took part in the 2017 London Marathon and has been the source of inspiration for pulling together such a big team to take on the full and half marathons.

Adam said: “We started training at the beginning of the summer with two goals: to make it past the finishing line on the big day, and to raise £20k for the Young Persons Unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.”

The team have been training hard and hope to raise the money thanks to their huge and loyal customer base, who they hope will join them for an after party once all the running is over.

Adam said: “After the marathon the team will be heading to The Plough for a post-run Lickin’ Chicken Party with food, DJs and a free drink for anyone with a finishers medal!”

The money raised by the Scrambled Legs team will help QEHB Charity to continue supporting young people with cancer. The Young Persons Unit is designed to ensure that teenagers and young adults are diagnosed efficiently, treated effectively, and have the support they need to make it through their treatment and rebuild their lives after cancer.

QEHB Charity funds added extras over and above that which the NHS can provide. This has helped YPU to become a ‘home from home’ for young cancer patients and their families. From providing DVDs and computer games, to pizza nights and a specialist teacher, QEHB Charity goes over and above for young people with cancer.

Justine Davy, Head of Fundraising at QEHB Charity said: “Huge thanks go to the amazing team from The Plough Harborne for their amazing fundraising and running efforts. It is fantastic to see such a large group come together to raise money to support young people with cancer.

“On behalf of QEHB Charity I wish them all the very best for the marathon and half marathon and I look forward to cheering them all along on the route.”
