Rabia jumps from the skies for Breast Cancer appeal

Rabia Khanum has done many things for the hospital charity before, but this time decided to face her fears and jump 15,000ft from a plane in a tandem skydive to raise money for the Breast Cancer appeal at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

One of her closest friends of over 35 years, and two of her colleagues, are currently being treated for breast cancer at the hospital so she wanted to raise money for the appeal as it is close to her heart.

Talking about the skydive, Rabia, who works at the University of Birmingham in the Medical School Library, said: “I’ve never done anything like a skydive before and I wanted to do something that would challenge me, so this was an ideal opportunity and I just thought, why not?

“It was both exhilarating and exciting at the same time and it was absolutely amazing. I only screamed when I first dropped out of the plane, after that it just felt like I was floating.

“The view as you’re coming down was just amazing, it was a wonderful feeling.”

Rabia has raised an incredible £1,282.11 for the Breast Cancer appeal with the help of her friends and family sponsoring her to face her fears!

Roisin Mooney, Fundraising Officer for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity, said: “A huge well done goes to Rabia who raised an incredible amount of money for the Breast Cancel appeal by taking part in a skydive!

“She has done incredible well and all of the money she has raised will go towards purchasing added extras that go ‘over and above’ what the NHS can fund for breast cancer patients.”

Rabia has also been a volunteer for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham for over ten years which has given her new friends, she said: “It’s such a great opportunity!”
