Rob cycles 400 miles for Lymphoma patients at QEHB

Late last year, one of Rob Clarke’s friends discovered a lump on his neck which led to him being diagnosed with Lymphoma at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, and now Rob has ridden over 400 miles to raise money for the hospital.

Darren, Rob’s friend, noticed the lump on his neck in late 2018 and after being referred and diagnosed at QEHB, he immediately started a course of chemotherapy. Lymphoma is a type of blood cancer that affects the lymph nodes in the body, but is luckily usually treatable.

Rob decided to take on an incredibly difficult challenge of cycling 400 miles in the Aberdovey Bike Ride to raise money for the hospital that has treated his friend. Rob extended the challenge to four days where he travelled from Wolverhampton to Aberdovey which included even more hills and a lot more miles!

Talking about the challenge, Rob said: “The ride went well, the weather was very wet at the beginning of the week but improved as the week went on and was fantastic on the Friday which was great as this was the main day where over 700 people took part.

“I ended up riding 401 miles and climbing 26,700 feet, Aberdovey is a beautiful place to finish the ride. I’m so please to have been able to help raise funds for the Lymphoma fund.”

So far, Rob has raised an incredible £1,302.69 for the Lymphoma fund within the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity!

Darren has recently finished his course of chemotherapy at QEHB. Rob said: “QEHB have been brilliant, the money raised will be going directly to where Darren spent most of his time during his treatment.”

Rob funded the entire challenge himself so all donations go straight towards his fundraising target which he has more than doubled!

Sophie Carroll, Senior Fundraiser at QEHB Charity, said: “A huge well done goes to Rob for cycling such an incredible distance to raise money for Lymphoma patients like Darren at the hospital.

“The money raised will go straight to where Darren was treated to help fund added extras that go over and above what the NHS can’t fund to help make stays at the hospital a bit more comfortable for patients.”
