Solvay Oldbury walk 24 miles to help elderly patients

A group of staff from Solvay Oldbury, along with their friends and family, walked 24 miles across the Yorkshire Moors in the scorching sunshine in June to raise money for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity.

The group raised £6,000 for the Elderly Care Appeal at the hospital which will go towards buying MyLife systems which are interactive units that run entertainment designed specifically for people with dementia. The systems contain a range of therapeutic tools and memory related activities to help comfort those with dementia.

Vic Walters, Personal Assistant to Site Director, helped to organise the walk and said: “Several members of our walking team have relatives who have been diagnosed with dementia, hence the Elderly Care Appeal is a cause that is close to their hearts.

“We are extremely grateful to everyone who generously sponsored our efforts and helped us to reach our £6,000 goal.”

Rachel Learmonth, Senior Fundraiser for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity, said: “This is a fantastic boost for our appeal and on behalf of the Charity, I would like to thank all of the walkers and sponsors who have made it possible.

“The money raised will go towards MyLife interactive software which provides valuable therapy on hospital wards by helping staff to stimulate engaging conversations that can aid memory for dementia patients.”
