Young patient picks up toy from very special tree
A young cancer patient, who has just finished a course of radiotherapy, has had a lovely surprise today as he has picked up a special soft toy to celebrate the end of his course of treatment.
Philip Mazan, aged 10, has been treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham in the radiotherapy department, and had been cared for by Specialist Paediatric Radiographer Liam Herbert. Liam led Philip and his dad, Robert, out of the treatment room and into the reception area of the department, where the tree was waiting for Philip.
This amazing tree has been sponsored by the Get Ahead Charitable Trust, and is covered in toys for radiotherapy patients to choose and take home with them.
Young Philip was delighted to pick up a reindeer soft toy to take back home with him, and he's looking forward to enjoying the Christmas period with his family, especially his little brother Owen who is two years old.
Liam Herbert said: "It was a privilege to see Philip's face light up when I told him that he could take a toy from the tree. Having radiotherapy treatment is tough on young children and can make them feel really poorly, that's why it's so nice to be able to give toys to the children when they finish their treatment."
Everyone at QEHB Charity wishes Philip and his family a very Merry Christmas.
